[TW: child rape, rape apologism, rape culture]
I just finished reading the Grand Jury’s Report.
Wow.
I’m not even shocked that Paterno, Schultz & Curley et al. didn’t report the abuse to authorities; rape culture is repulsive but it doesn’t shock me any longer.
No, what disgusts me is that NO ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO IDENTIFY OR HELP THE VICTIM(S). All the responses from coaches and officials were that of managing the incident with regards to the offender. That in all of these discussions NOT ONE SINGLE FUCKING PERSON thought to find out about the boy concerned. Like actually. What in all manner of fuckery is this?
“Although Schultz oversaw the University Police as part of his position, he never reported the 2002 incident to the University Police or other police agency, never sought or reviewed a police report on the 1998 incident and never attempted to learn the identity of the child in the shower in 2002. No one from the University did so.”
Not to mention the graduate assistant who witnessed a ten year old boy being sodomised and DIDN’T INTERRUPT OR STOP IT BUT JUST LEFT THEM TO IT.
“He saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be ten years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant was shocked but noticed that both Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate assistant left immediately, distraught.”
I don’t care how distraught you are. If you see a small child being raped you DON’T leave the room.
I’m also struck by another comment in the Report:
“This was when Victim 4 was trying to distance himself from Sandusky because he wanted no more sexual contact with him.”
Actually what is this? The implication that a 12 year old boy is capable of “wanting” ANY sexual contact with a grown man.
And then of course there’s this:
“In the fall of 2000, a janitor named James “Jim” Calhoun observed Sandusky in the showers of the Lasch Building with a young boy pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He immediately made known to other janitorial staff what he had just witnessed…Jim reported to Witherite that he had observed Sandusky performing oral sex on the boy in the showers. Witherite tried to calm Jim, who was cursing and remained upset throughout the shift. Witherite told him to whom he should report the incident, if he chose to report it.”
It absolutely beggars belief there could be such a continued (and almost DETERMINED) failure to stop a known child rapist from raping more children.
“Both the graduate assistant and Curley testified that Sandusky himself was not banned from any Penn State buildings and Curley admitted that the ban on bringing children to the campus was unenforceable.”
Just wow.
Wow.

"[TW: abuse, rape] My heart aches for Sandusky’s victims but also for every Penn State student who has survived abuse and who has to step onto that campus tomorrow, look around, and wonder just who is callous enough to have been rioting last night in support of a man who could have stopped the abuse but didn’t."

Every single one of these idiots would have been better off sitting in their dorm rooms last night and reading the indictment.

» Choice quotes from douchenozzle Penn State students via the New York Times story on the riots following Joe Paterno's firing.
- “I think the point people are trying to make is the media is responsible for JoePa going down.” — Penn State freshman on why it was totally okay to overturn a news broadcast truck. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS (from 1-10): 9.
- “We got rowdy, and we got maced. But make no mistake, the board started this riot by firing our coach. They tarnished a legend.” 19-year-old Penn Stater, who apparently fails to realize that covering up criminal sexual activity is actually what tarnishes a legend. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS: 10.
- “It’s not fair. The board is an embarrassment to our school and a disservice to the student population.” — 20-year-old Penn Stater, who is apparently not embarrassed that an assistant coach on his school’s football team raped young boys. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS: 11.
- “This definitely looks bad for our school. I’m sure JoePa wouldn’t want this, but this is just an uproar now, we’re finding a way to express our anger.” — Freshman Penn Stater, who is good at stating the obvious and being contradictory all at once. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS: 12.
- “Of course we’re going to riot. What do they expect when they tell us at 10 o’clock that they fired our football coach?” — 24-year-old Penn Stater, who probably didn’t riot when he found out Joe Paterno’s lieutenant raped little boys. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS: 15.
- “My friends were like, ‘I don’t want to get maced.’ I was like, ‘I don’t want to miss seeing this, so I guess that means I do kind of want to get maced.’” — Freshman Penn Stater, who I hope was maced. DOUCHENOZZLE POINTS: 8.
UGH UGH UGH @ the quotes.
