"You have to question a cinematic culture which preaches artistic expression, and yet would support a decision that is clearly a product of a patriarchy-dominant society, which tries to control how women are depicted on screen. The MPAA is okay supporting scenes that portray women in scenarios of sexual torture and violence for entertainment purposes, but they are trying to force us to look away from a scene that shows a woman in a sexual scenario, which is both complicit and complex. It’s misogynistic in nature to try and control a woman’s sexual presentation of self. I consider this an issue that is bigger than this film. … There is something very distorted about this reality that they’ve created, which is that it is OK to torture women on screen. Any kind of violence towards women in a sexual scenario is fine. But give a woman pleasure? No way. Not a chance. That’s pornography."Ryan Gosling, actor and feminist, in a letter protesting the NC-17 rating of Blue Valentine. The rating was based on one consensual sex scene, in which he goes down on Michelle Williams. (via ladiebear)

» Is Thor a Feminist Movie? (Yes)
There’s no easy way for me to break this to you, so make sure you’re sitting down: Kenneth Branagh’s Thor (2011) is a feminist movie. Okay, I admit that on the surface a movie about an uber-masculine hammer-wielding thunder god doesn’t exactly seem like fertile ground for a feminist reading. But it’s surprisingly subversive of the genre of action movies and an extremely sensitive portrayal of a group of human beings who are dealing with their own crap and other people’s crap and not doing very well with either.
Very interesting article. I actually haven’t seen the Thor movie yet, but I guess I will soon!

I saw like five of these posters at every subway stop in Manhattan, and I had the same thoughts with their use of the word “it.” Highly offensive.Hello anti-trans bigotry.* I know what movie I’ll gladly avoid feeding with my dollars.
*Get it? “It ain’t pretty” because she has an adams apple! And a penis! And that means she’s really a he! And hes can’t be pretty! Hahahaha… ha… FAIL.
(via Enter The Jack and Jill Awkward Sibling ContestAdam Sandler is Jack and Jill. In theaters 11/11/11)
Comedy, at the expense of people.
I think ‘Jill’ is probably supposed to be a cis woman in the context of the movie. But ‘HURR DURR, ADAM SANDLER IN DRAG’ is the main joke here, so it could still be considered transphobic. I don’t see how anyone over the age of seven would be interested in this, anyway.
why is adam sandler
Yes. I’ve been trying to figure out exactly what it was that was really bugging me about this movie (aside from the fact that it looks REALLY bad). You’ve all said what I was thinking but couldn’t quite put into words.
ETA: For some reason when I save this afunnyfeminist’s comment doesn’t show up. That comment is that their use of “it” is also offensive.
